Week One in Watercolor

My class this past Tuesday was great!
Wonderful company (Candace Camling of course), Melinda Kabel is a pleasure to learn from, and the other students are just some of the sweetest people. Tho, it was challenging for me, the watercolor fantasy artist.

The class in a nutshell is this: she gives a project to work on, tho you don't have to do it. If you have your own it can also be like an open studio.

I decided to work out of my comfort zone and do the project....which was landscape. -_- *sigh* I do not like landscape OR still life. Find them boring. But like in college and in growing as an artist they are just as important as imagination. So kudos to me for not painting a fairy or mermaid! :P

We chose a black and white photocopy of a landscape and then did a neutral value study of it. This wasn't too difficult, but required me to stay loose in my approach and thinking. I decided to use my watercolor moleskine thats been sitting around for years unused.

After that you find a color magazine tear out of a different painting, but applying the colors from that piece to your black and white study. Make sense? So in the end you would have two paintings.

I found this to be frustrating and difficult. I chatted with Melinda about how I can see the colors for what they are, but to start mixing them.......

let's just say that I felt like I was brand new to the medium and felt what every beginning watercolor student felt..the worry that I was going to mess it up.

I think over time of building up the painting it would have turned out fine. I felt like all eyes were on me tho because I was the only one doing a landscape on hot press watercolor paper. I understand where it can create a problem, but it's what I own and like most, I can't purchase more paper at the moment.

The Ah Ha Moment
During the class I also talked to the instructor about what I was hoping to discover in the course of 13 weeks. I want to learn how to get a great sense of light and shadow without muddying up my paint. I feel I tend to do that in my work. I have noticed that for some reason the colors just don't "go" with each other.

"Love Floats" Giveaway

We talked, and she asked me to make some color palettes for skin. I needed to choose a red, yellow, and blue for each one....making several palettes from different primaries. HOURS later as I was doing this it clicked!!

The reason my shadows don't work with my lights is because I keep changing my reds, yellows, and blues throughout the painting. There is no consistency! Duh! I couldn't believe it took this long to figure out.

I finished "Love Floats" with this concept. I think she turned out vibrant and cohesive. She's muddy in places because of the work I did on her before the class. But her tail, hair, and skin all flow together.

This does not set aside my fears. I did the palettes and still feel a bit lost. I think this will definitely be a growing period in my painting. So look forward to inconsistent works full of exploration. I think. :P

Hopefully in the next few weeks I'll have a skin palette that will be "my" palette!

Here's a study I'm doing with a palette similar to artist Paul McCormack 's palette (more links below). Testing it out trying to figure out how to apply the colors, where, and when. I think this is going to take lots of practice. o.O

McCormack did a free art lesson with Jerry's Artarama that I watched this morning. It's fascinating to watch an artist you admire work. Currently sitting and soaking like a sponge. ^_^

My Biggest Blessing? It's a hard question because my life is truly filled with so many blessings! It's why you see me use the word everywhere, because I am overflowing with them.

I think my biggest blessing is when God encompassed all of me and saved me from a life that could have led to death. I mean this in a physical sense, although he saved my soul too. If he had not done that, and loved me so much to do that, I would not have my husband, my friends, my in laws, the amazing relationships with my mom, dad, and sister, it's astounding.

The life I have now as I know it would not exist....and the one that would be....makes me shudder to even think about. I knew I had to get out of that situation, that lifestyle, but couldn't do it on my own. He and I truly bonded through that experience. It's amazing what miracles he brings. :)

Researching Watercolor

This semester at the Des Moines Art Center I have signed up to take a watercolor class with my friend Candace Camling. My first one. I'm not joking. I'm pretty excited the more and more I think about it.

"Be My Valentine" WIP detail

For the last couple of years, and more than ever today, I feel I lack something in my watercolor, and I think it's how to actually paint in watercolor. I am completely self taught (aside from a few tips here and there from teachers in college illustration/high school art). You'd think I'd have a bit more knowledge after over 10 years in the medium, but after the last couple of days I have learned I lack a lot!

I some how got started on watching watercolor painting how-tos on YouTube. Wow. Though I didn't truly find what I was looking for, I got hooked on just watching other artists paint in the medium....and I would have been caught with my mouth open and my eyes glued. Such astounding fluidity and use of color! Everything so translucent and full of breath. I want to be able to do that too!

Now I do have some knowledge of color, and some knowledge about glazing, but there are steps I have missed because I haven't been taught. And I don't know about you, but if there aren't enough pictures or a video to demonstrate something, rarely get it. Translation: Books only help if they have pictures. :P Sad, but oh so true.

So I'm puttin' on my student boots again (it's been awhile!), and taking the plunge to learn more traditional watercolor. A Woman with a Past

Rahab

Natalie gave me a series of books by Francine Rivers that basically took me away from reality for about two weeks. Five books, five women, all from the Bible. They are called fiction because much was "filler" to complete the stories and to allow the reader to feel right there. But because of these "fillers" I learned more about these women and was led to reading the scriptures.

Rahab was not the first, but she sticks out.....or was the first to enter my mind when thinking of this project over a year ago. I had to really think about why, and I think the answer is....because she had a past.

She (by most scholars and pros) was a harlot, she betrayed her people, and she boldly asked for something in return for helping. Is that giving with a cheerful heart not expecting any pay? Nope. I relate to this. I have a past, I've been and sometimes still am nasty to others, I think a lot about my needs and myself, I like to control others, etc. The list goes on.

Here's the beginning thoughts. Her pose and the place.

Yet she showed that she believed in the LORD who sent His people to take down the strongest city on the Promise Land, Jericho. She had faith in the LORD.

What I loved so much about Francine's story of Rahab was how she wrote the possible thoughts that were going through Rahab's mind about the LORD and who He was and what He was doing......and if He could love her.

Then, she began to trust Him....turn away from the destruction and pain....and turn to Him. She got to live in the Promise Land because of that faith and trust. It's astounding to me how wide and deep and far the love of God is.

Okay, so the process...it's a lengthy one. I first started with some soft tunes to get me where I needed to be, a bit melancholy but faith filled. The drawing of Rahab on the left page was the first response (above). The drawing of Rahab on the right page of the sketchbook was more about studying her legs. It's a weird perspective....but I felt I got it. Then the drawings of environment came in.

Figuring out the setting.

I struggle a lot with environment, and I think that, along with composition, it will be the biggest struggle for me with this project. So with that said, I had to do some research.

I knew that what I'd find for Jericho would probably be a lot of ruins that wouldn't help much, so I looked up Palestinian architecture since that is the location today.

SO beautiful!!! You never really see it in the sketches, but I plan on taking time on some of those details in the architecture for the final piece. It makes me drool.

After research, I re-sketched her, trying to figure out details of the clothing, seeing if I could draw the pose again, decide the lighting...and although she looks great, I felt it lacking.

Configuring details.

The whole point of the project is to "feel" and "be there" with the character. Shoot, if I don't get that how is the viewer?!

Nope, this wasn't working and I knew it. The hard part is letting it go. And I did. I decided I needed to sketch.

Candace gave me a great piece of advice she said to sketch from reference something other than the project. Paraphrasing of course, but ya get the gist. So for the rest of the afternoon I sketched random images from around the studio. It helped, because by late evening I was ready to try again, and I think I got something.

There are still some adjustments to be made, but I understand this one. I can smell and feel the breeze, I can figure out her emotion, her yearning to understand God and wonder where she fits in it all, how His love could include her.

Now the tricky part...the placement of that sketch. I want freedom with these. I want open space to play.

I was reading Stephanie Law's blog today and she said something pivotal. It was if you don't draw enough, what you do draw becomes precious, thus you work harder and possibly over work to make it perfect...special...no more fun (paraphrasing again). I totally agree and I can feel it. I feel stiff in thought and execution. I teach all of the fun techniques that I know in watercolor to my students, but use only two or three.

Why?! Why am I not exploring and applying my own teachings?
Hopefully I will in these pieces, which is why I want the 12x16 space!

Which brings me to my final bit of this project....practice, practice, practice.

And I need your help!

I need to sketch more, just to sketch. I need to loosen my mind, hand, and imagination. I need to become comfortable with my favorite mediums again to where I can run free with them and enjoy the act of drawing/painting.

Have one of those days?

I had my jump drive in my purse...at least Ithought I did until I got to my sister-in-law's and discovered I don't.So that means no update on the Bible series until tonight. Sorry folks.But it's just one of those days that you have to go with it and not plan further ahead than the next moment. Though, I am learning that is probably the best way to live. Another wonderful opportunity to learn and grow from. :)

So I'm here, watching my wee lil niece nap away, thinking to myself what can I blog about?

I want to share a few things I've discovered recently online from otherartists. soap box → I think we as a community should support, share, and help one another on our path to becoming successful and great artists. There will always be competition, but it can be a healthy and pleasant one. Just my view.

Stephanie Law's New Technique

I found her blog - http://shadowscapes-stephanielaw.blogspot.com/ - which I'm kind of embarrassed it took me that long, and I was thrilled to see such beautiful imagery AND a new experiment (well, it's from September...). Her work has always fascinated me and pushes me to be a stronger artist in how I layout my compositions and use light.

She has started to use fixative spray on her paintings to build up the color and layers. I find this genius and must try it sometime soon. I think she's really onto something here and would love to hear if anyone else gives it a try. Six Month Mark

"Translucence" Final Painting of 2011

Time to let go and allow change.

I'm a control freak, you may not know it, but I am. I like everything to go my way and done quickly right when I ask. Unfortunately I hear that the world does not revolve around me. Bummer.

My challenge this year is the same as last year, to constantly give up the control I strive so hard to have, and surrender it to God. What a relief!!! Now, if I can just see it that way on a regular basis I think all would be good. This totally applies to my business and how I run my studio. I want to do everything myself and have a very hard time trusting others with my "baby". But thanks to God, I do have help and step one is allowing that help to well......help.

Brian and I sat down a week ago and organized my thoughts, to-do lists, and business plans on note cards, then on a calendar. I don't have to think about what to do, and my second challenge this year is to stick to the schedule.

But there's something else that has changed, and it's been working in my heart for a few months now. It's the question of "What is my purpose?" A question I'm sure most if not all of us have asked ourselves. I've been praying, talking, and pondering this. And even more so, how does this involve my natural gifts as an artist? I ask myself this question almost every six months, and it's a cycle, but I feel it's necessary if I am to grow.

He laid it on my heart.

The answer lies within my every day and the people I am in constant contact with.

On the side I privately tutor and advise teenagers/college students. We talk about more than just art and drawing, we talk about life. This in turn makes me reflect on my life, which then leads me to what inspires me to be who I want to be. The answer I keep going back to is a handful of men and women who have struggled and messed up, but were created and intended for GREAT things! They were special through their purpose.

These people were Rahab, Tamar, Ruth, Esther, Mary, Jacob, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, David, etc. These are familiar names to so many, and their stories truly are powerful and relatable.

Okay, so how does this relate to my business? I want to use these stories to help people learn, to retell their stories in a new way, to inspire and motivate, to show everyone that they have a purpose and story of their own! They're so amazing it's hard to believe they're truth. To me, the Bible is the ultimate fairytale....but one that DID and IS happening!

I was thinking of doing the fairytales I so adore and love this year as my personal project, but it just never settled well on my heart. I then had the question pop up in my head:

"Well if I'm going to illustrate the fairytales and stories of the world, why not do the stories that are fantastical but true?"

I am terrified of this project because it's huge and demanding. A bit out of my comfort zone, and after organizing my business on paper....where am I going to get the time?! BUT I have had this longing and find a desire laid on my heart, and most importantly...a need.

The Project

I want to paint the women and men of the Bible, but in a fresh way. I'm not sure how to describe it, so you will need to bare with me and I will show as much as I can through sketches. The pieces "Midnight Warrior" and "Sienna" (yes, her name had to be changed) are great examples of the direction I want to go. Mix those with "Translucence" and you may get the vision.

I am not going to do a lot of environment and costume research, nor am I going to worry about how accurate the piece is to the time it was written. My focus on this project is to convey the person, their experience or emotion, and try to visually allow the viewer to rest in the person/character's shoes. I admire all of the classical paintings telling the stories of the Bible, but why mimic and copy what has already been done? I don't believe they connect as richly with the people of today, especially the younger crowd.

I am not going in any order, I am just going to go. I am going to follow the light that is leading me in this and work/draw/paint on this project in His timing. No deadlines, no pressure, just to keep working at it.

The Flowers of the Month series is still going (February is in the works right now), and I hope to get the Three Pillars finished as well. My goal though, in the end, is to have a body of work that can coincide with the stories we all know so well, the stories of the Bible.

What does 2012 look like?

This year I hope to focus heavily on painting. I feel the need to really paint. And to draw or sketch more regularly. I pray that with this new project I will be sketching upon impulse, not when I just "have the time". To always carry a sketchbook with me. The visions I get for these characters rarely happen in the studio....but as I'm sitting and waiting, or teaching, or driving (don't worry, I'm not going to drive and draw).

I also plan on being more involved with my Bible. I will read each story before I paint it to make sure it is playing in my head, to be there with the characters.

And to be more in connection with you. My hope with the new blog and website layouts, that we are in more of a conversation and that I can show you more of my world and studio. Thursdays are going to be my blog days (hold me to that will ya?). So nonetheless, there should always be something here on the blog every Thursday!

The Camling House

So I've been updating my Amazon wish list for the last two weeks. It's a must for this time of year for two reasons. Birthday and Christmas. :) My mom and sister live for Amazon and how convenient it is. This got me thinking about things I need and want. One of them is the canvas brush holder that rolls up.

As I was preparing to paint yesterday I realized I wouldn't mind having a brush holder for the desk that held them up right. I'm getting a bit restless with how much my brushes roll around on my table. I did a google search and of course, Dick Blick came up. But so did a Sephora Inspired Brush Holder.

I had pebble rocks, I had jars, BAM! I have an instant brush holder. I painted and it was AMAZING the difference a brush holder makes. And...I didn't have to spend a cent.

To the left you'll see mine. I had jars, but when I saw this flower pot (attached to my heart) just sitting there not being used I thought it to be perfect. The soup cup is my water dish. I really like finding things around the house to use instead of spending money. Plus, I think it gives your studio and table some character.

THE CAMLING HOUSE

One of my closest friend's birthday was yesterday. You might have heard of her...Candace Camling. If not, you should get to know her by visiting her blog HERE. As a gift, I created a bird house. She enjoys gardening, vintage, and bright colors. Also little critters like squirrels, birds, sugar gliders, and rabbits. I thought a bird house would be perfect!

I've painted bird houses in the past, and I wanted to give it another shot, doing a few things different this time.

I decided to use stencils first instead of painting randomly. I'm not very proficient in acrylic painting (and don't want to spend money on watercolor ground), so I have discovered keeping it simple is a good place to start.

I found it important to have a color and "theme" to start with. There are SO many possibilities with bird houses that it actually becomes overwhelming.

I first did the blue paint. Once it was dried I sanded it down to give a worn and weathered look. All of the trim and petals came way later in the process. I then moved on to imagery. I sponged in the branches, which left a lot more paint than I intended around my stencil. Not loving it I attempted to cover it with another layer of paint. I painted on the birds using a new tool (that worked much better...a sponge on a stick). After they were dry I then went in and painted them with a brush to bring the intensity of their shape back.

I discovered that I couldn't cover up the branches, but now they looked faded which was awesome! I took the sand paper and gently sanded away more paint from the branches in a few spots to bring out the lines. A happy accident. :)

Then came the detailing. I felt pretty confident with the direction and my imagination agreed. Things just started to come together. I kept thinking vintage, and the coral pinks went so well with the green blue. Reminded me of the old 3-D stop animation from the 70s (think Rudolph). I just started to add things that reminded me of Candace. A heart, the stripes, the line work around the hole which I thought looked like a large flower, etc.

I also added the white and pink trim to make the house feel more airy and sectioned. Adding her last name was pretty far towards the last detail I did. I thought if the house was outside how sweet it would be to have a personalized bird house. :) Alas, it is in her studio now, but still just as sweet.

Finally something needed to happen to the top. Brian and I discussed it and somehow somewhere I got the idea of doing a "cone" flower. lol It made me giggle but was so appropriate! So happy I did, because it brought the whole thing together!

All I did was glue on wooden shingle pieces I bought at Hobby Lobby for doll houses, then painted around. At this point I also learned of craft paint. Brian had some left over from college and it's amazing! Opaque like acrylic but more of a liquid. Much easier to work with! I then went crazy and brightened alllll of my whites. Totally made the piece pop! To finish, of course, the eyelet screw and a wee metal ball to decorate. I signed the bottom, added a yellow bow, and dropped it off.

Maybe when I retire (sheeeeah right) I'll make bird houses. ;)

Do you Braid?

Those who know me well...
know I always have a braid somewhere on my head. And if I don't, they know to look for my cross.

Braids have always been part of hair fashion and care since...wow...I don't think I need to research to say hundreds and hundreds of years!

To me they are a symbol of strength.

Tribal women from all over the world braid their hair. In movies we see women of strength braid their hair to hold it back...while still keeping the length (something very magical about a woman with long hair). The braids represent a warrior.

A symbol of womanhood.

What is the timeless admiration of long hair? In art women with long hair is much more common than that of women with shorter locks. I believe it was even a representation of a woman's character or status. Today probably not so much..it comes down to more of a fashion statement, but in my romantic mind I think it was much more hundreds of years ago.

A symbol of royalty.

As I read through numerous fairytales and stories as a little girl, I rarely saw any princess or queen with short hair. Let alone hair without some hint of braiding. The waves from a braid during sleep, a braided crown, braided hoops, etc.

And a symbol of commitment.

One I am learning. It takes care and commitment to your health and care to have long hair. It breaks, it tangles, it pulls while you sleep, and it even gets caught in your armpits and pulls from there on some occasions. Being around small children...it must always be up! And you don't want to wash it every day. What to do with that oily hair?!

I braid it every day as my commitment to the Lord. I don't always want to wear my cross necklace, and I don't wish to yell out and voice every day that I'M CHRISTIAN. Instead, I want to live it out and have that be the focus. The braids, and the process of braiding is meditation for me to remember who I am in Christ.

I am beautiful, I have a purpose, I am loved, I am strong through the strength He gives me through His Spirit, and I am an heir to the Kingdom.

The Three Pillars

What is your foundation?

Before I get into what mine is, I want to give a bit of background to the images you're going to see.

Towards the end of last year I introduced three little angels to you. One named Twilight, one Dusk, and the other Noon. Each one features animals and obviously, a certain time of day. This was the basis/theme for the series. To catch up, here are the two links to those posts:

Many crafters have used these images and created gorgeous cards with them! It has inspired me not to give up on the images....but I still wasn't motivated on how to use them yet.

I have created many line art works for Crafts and Me, and there is something rewarding seeing all of your paintings and sketches in beautiful, black, and clean lines. I knew this past Monday I had to keep painting. Oceana is finished, and I'm still working on the months and another large WIP, but I believe I can do more. With two shows next year (more on that later), I need to be painting!

Though, I didn't want to think about composition or the poses. I went through those beautiful line art works and saw the little angels. PERFECT! Now is the time.
But will I stay with the titles and theme?
Here's what I wanted from these:

The focus to be solely on the angel, and the background to be simple enough for licensing.
Large enough to make an impact in person, but not so huge I will never get them done.
They have to be sitting on something that can be similar in each and again, doesn't take away from the angel.
To have a meaning worth sharing, that aligns with my faith, and inspires.

The results? The Three Pillars.

These are the three pillars, or foundations of my faith and life. I truly believe, that if you give and have all three of these; Love, Hope, Grace; your life will be fruitful and filled with a sense of fulfillment.

I am inspired today, Mae Day (as Brian likes to call it), the day I watch my baby niece, when I look at these drawings. Combining the two I am excited because these three little angels bring a message that in turn brings glory to God. What a beautiful image for young girls to grow up with, images they can relate to that show these foundations. I am so motivated to paint!

"The Blessing" and Things

Our life is made up of little things.
This is one of those posts where I share the little things that happen in my life. There's art, I promise.

First some exciting news!
We took out our air conditioners this past Sunday and found this!

Now, we knew we had birds nesting in our window sill in the kitchen. You could hear them, the cats totally heard them (Talor would scratch at the window all summer), but we just had no idea it would be this big!

We were both surprised (and thankful the birds had left their nest). It was fantastic to get an up close and personal look at this beautifully weaved nest.

Wow...just amazing.

Talor in her new spot. She was weighed in at 13.4 lbs at the vet! Oy!

After cleaning up from the removal of the air conditioners it spurred a whole cleaning and sorting spree. Brian and I really enjoy rearranging and trying to find the best way to utilize our space.

Not only that, but Brian brought home a giant plant from work on Friday. Whoo!! Problem was, we had no place to put it that would keep Talor from playing with it. The combination of the air conditioners and the plant created the best reason to rearrange.

The studio got cleaned up and moved around a bit, now there is no place for Talor to destroy. She keeps coming in trying to find something to knock over or climb on. Nothing. Except for the plant. lol But she has learned fast not to jump up to it.

To help out, I created a new napping spot for her. Within moments she made it hers, and....rarely leaves it when the studio is open. :) I am very proud of her for being such a good listener.

Once the studio was freshened up, again, I pulled out a painting that Natalie had suggested I finish. And, I did. I enjoy the piece, but find the format interesting for prints. I hope I find some use for it. I thought about ornaments, but circles don't cook well and turn into ovals. :/ Thus the reason you don't see circle ornaments in my shop.

Lastly a sneak peek at the December fairy. Prejudging not allowed. I say that because I am still not satisfied with her face. But I was the same way with the one above and in the end it came together.

I had to redraw and paint this several times!

The first one I didn't think my colors through, and it was too late to fix anything. The background turned to mud.

Then on the new piece I redrew her, oh about two times, and redrew her face about four times.

Brian says her face looks fine, to me it looks off. But I'm not giving up! Also, she's a bit different than my other girls. Once she's finished I'll go into why, but she's heavier set and has short curly hair. Hope to have her done this week!

The Untitled Mermaid

She emerges...

There's something emerging in my work lately, something very raw and real to me. When I place together "Midnight Warrior" and this piece, I see sister souls, or female figures demonstrating the same heart.

And there's something else too. How I'm beginning to portray them. What I add, the attention to portrait, bolder colors. I am taken back to my past when I used to draw tattooed mermaids and fairies painted in dark colors.

Yet this time it's different. This time they are strong, confident, and filled with a breath that when exhaled speaks "Warrior."

These small yet powerful paintings are reflecting the amazing Spirit within me, to share the empowerment the King wishes to bestow upon His daughters, the empowerment and strength we hold as princesses and heirs to His Kingdom.

These images are portraying the Warrior Princess. Aye, we are.

Holiday Boot Camp

then you probably know all about the Holiday Boot Camp. It started up two weeks ago, and I always look forward to it.


Original Watercolor Painting - "Lady of the Field		"

I look forward to someone else telling me what I should do to get my business in shape. It's hard running a business by yourself. I do everything (except my taxes, my sister comes over and helps me with the paper work). It's motivating to have a "To Do" list given by people I trust my business with. Now the work is here, and I'm busy as a bee.

But there lies the problem. I am more social this year, I believe, than any other year in my life. I am truly so overwhelmed with blessings that I can't keep up! I have two amazing families...mine and Brian's, a church family that I have bonded to like glue, and even at work I'm really creating relationships with my students...and with the kids at the youth group.

Bookmark - "The Grumpy Troll"

Where does the business fit in all of this? Heh, and I don't even have kids yet! I have a few hours every day to work on it. The "To Do" list feels too big for me.

I took almost 200 photos last week, but every one needs to be tweaked and cropped. Creating inventory takes quite a bit of time! I've come up with some packaging, but folding and cutting takes time. I'm making excuses in a sense, but truly, how do you make time?

I have also been trying to keep myself healthier this year. Brian and I quit smoking around March/April and began walking/going to the gym, eating healthier (which means cooking), and just making smarter choices. One of those is being sure to get at least 6 full hours of sleep every night. I would like it to be 7, but wow...I don't know where that hour is going to come from.

ACEO - "Hollyhock Princess"

Did I mention that I have to paint somewhere in there too? Have you noticed not too many paintings are popping up? And I discovered in the last two weeks, I need to fit this in.

There is also a need within me. Although I've enjoyed what I've painted lately, I personally feel they could be more. It's like I'm in a phase where things need to stay in small scale, just so I can be sure it will get done. There is so much out there I want to do! Why can't the days be like 40 hours instead of 24? And we would just be used to that.

It may appear that I am complaining, and I'm not. I feel seriously blessed by all of the stuff I have to do. So much more productive and worth my time than ever before. I actually see my life growing! Managing it is a new deal for me, so...

How do you do it? I am anxious to hear how other sellers or artists make the time to create income off of their craft while still running a home/life.

By the way, here's a work in progress. The goal is to have her done next week. She's 6x4 inches. "November"....hopefully....will be done tomorrow.

Tour the Studio

Show and Tell

I love peoples work spaces, especially artist studios. To see what makes them tick, their inspirations, how they organize (so that I can learn how to do a better job of it), etc.

About once or twice a year I'll reorganize and "situate" everything. Usually during the beginning of spring and of fall. Summer and winter are my busiest months so this makes sense. I have decided to get a bit more comfortable with the space since we probably won't be moving any time soon.

And to my fellow artist friends, I tried to get at least one of the pieces I've purchased up on my wall. You all inspire me so much, and I am deeply grateful for your companionship on this journey. :)

Shall we begin the tour? Okie doke.

My corner. What I see right when I walk into the studio. The adjacent corner is Brian's bookshelf and weights.

The drawing table. All crafting and art making happens here. Truly, I usually only have one piece out at a time, even if I'm working on more than one. I'm already pretty scatterbrained....having more than one piece out would demand too much.

A new addition to the studio. My lil' "Cheerful Blessings" spot. It's to cheer me up and remind me of all the blessings in my life. Sunshine fairy compliments of James Browne.

View of my inspiration wall. I suggest this kind of wall to my students. Since I was a teen I have always covered my walls with artwork, photos, and small items. I take a lot of breaks where I just stare at the wall. Most often this will break any artist block or get me motivated to work.

This is also where I process orders.

On the way out are all of my reference and manga books and storage for craft/art supplies I use very little.

Midnight Warrior

She has stunned me.


"The quiet midnight warrior, without a sound, brings glory to her King ."

It is rare for one of my paintings to stop me in my tracks and send shivers down my spine. But the more I gazed upon this wee painting, the more in awe I became.

One: it is rare for my paintings to appear looking at the viewer. "Lusinga", "Roseilee", and "Mourning" are the only ones....recently...that look at you. "Lusinga" and "Mourning" are some of my top sellers.

Two: The movement feels like a quiet moment, paused or in slow motion, as she passes by me while I'm on a night walk.

Three: Her wisdom and strength just presses upon my chest and makes me hold my breath....in a good way. The only thing I can compare that to is when I've seen a buck in our front yard during the winter. It's such a serene and heavenly moment that you want to last forever because of the majesty it represents.

Four: I see God in her eyes and in her breath. I'm astounded by that.

And Five: No colored pencil except for the drawing itself under the paint. I'm pretty proud of the richness I was able to create without relying on the colored pencil.

It's hard to believe she's only 4x6 inches, and the piece took me less than 48 hours. This is truly a piece by me from God. And I am in awe of his Majesty.

Yuppers, it's turnin' into autumn!

First thing's first...

The new Flower of the Month fairy for September is finished! It's been finished for a few weeks (sorry for my delay in posting). I have started November, she should be out by the end of September, if not the first week of October.

My Mama

My mother's birthday is in September, so any time I do a piece that has to do with Libra, September, Sapphire, or Autumn I tend to show features that resemble my mom.

She's a constant source of inspiration for me in the women I wish to show having courage and maturity. Plus, she has long gorgeous black hair. That inspires me EVERY time. :)

A Painting for Halloween

I don't normally paint for Halloween. It's been years since I even had the desire to. Now...that's not saying I don't like Halloween, but my work tends to be something that could be used year round. I like that. But I do so love a good mask, so I thought I'd paint one. :)

Here's the work in progress. She's pretty small; a 4x6 painting. Something quick but elegant. I have always wanted to throw a Masquerade Ball, hopefully someday I will. But until then, I must live through my paintings.

I hope to have her finished by the end of the week. If not, I'll go crazy! Not quite sure what to call her yet...

Have you ever been to a Masquerade Ball? If so, was it as much fun as they look? I want to know!

Birthday Flower Fairies

It has officially begun, a new series.

I have been wanting to do a birthday series for over two years now. Last year I did the colored pencil birthstone series, but only got half of them done. I find it difficult to finish a series.

I need your help!

Please keep me accountable for this series. Comment here or on Facebook, say how much you want to see your month, give ideas or suggestions, or just yell out "Hey, where's the next month?! It's been WEEKS!". :P

I want to do all twelve months. Here are the guidelines for my flower fairies...

Each piece will show:

The month's flower
The month's birthstone colors
A moon or sun
A braid of some sort in the hair (to me this is a symbol of God's warrior princess, or a daughter of God)
Something in the background having to do with the month and/or season
Must have a "Mucha" feeling. Yes, it has been done before, but I've been wanting to do it for a while and this is my chance.
Incorporate something from my pencil drawings (the birthstones).

Once the piece is finished I will post it as a 3.5x8.5 open edition print, and the original painting up on Etsy. I will try to get the pieces up in time for birthdays.

Since August is almost over I started with October. She's done entirely in watercolor, no colored pencil. It's been a while since I've done that.

New WIP

There's a new piece a brewin'

Months ago a close friend of mine had a birthday. Yay! I thought how wonderful would it be if I did a painting just for her (she does like my work after all). Since then it's been an uphill battle. Not with her, but with the piece.

Many revisions happened, but to me the piece was too stiff and didn't portray the emotion she wanted shown. This piece is to be hung in the house as a reminder of God's strength shown through our weakness. A motivation and assurance for her.

Although the last revision had beauty, movement, and lush detail....it just didn't have the soul or heart I felt needed to be present.

FINALLY the seal broke and we have a heart felt sketch...but not without pain.

If you look real close you can see all of the erase marks. TONS of erase marks. Over and over. I was going to sell the sketch, but with the amount of erasing and the crease that happened by catching the drawing as it fell towards the floor, I don't believe its sell worthy any more.

I also went through some major emotions and physical pain this past week concerning my own walk with God and my faith. But through the love and prayer of those close to me I feel lifted up, and I know all is well, that God is here helping me.

SO now it's time to put it all together. I'm waiting for my new large 14x20 watercolor block in the mail to transfer. Rach, if you're reading this....don't settle on a frame until you see it finished....I believe this is going to be bigger than planned. ;)

This small thumbnail sketch is the concept for the piece. I will be following this when I draw the whole thing out. More mushrooms in a forest. Yay!

Into the Word

to find peace, one must listen.

This past weekend, the past couple of weeks, I have personally been in some transition. Not with where I live, or my jobs, nothing like that. But mentally.

To find peace and calm waters I need my God, I need Jesus, I need Love, I need to know that I have no reason for worry. Without these...believe it or not...I become a mad woman with a very sharp tongue.

This past weekend I was able to sit and talk with a very wise woman named Debbie who confirmed what has been simmering on my heart. I need to get to know who Christ was and is today.

He's the breath of my work, the reason I paint what I paint.

So I decided to listen to Matthew and John while painting. I didn't allow myself to do any other work (art related) other than this painting. It's a reminder that no matter how you choose to walk it, you need the Word. You need to Listen, and you need to Know. The result? PEACE.

Why share this with you? There are times where I find myself lost and pulled away from my painting. I run my etsy shop, work with licensors, etc. This piece was a must, and I'm so please with how she turned out because it conveys exactly what has been going on with me in the mist of daily life. The "moment" here is a "self portrait".

Brian and I woke up this morning with no power. Yup, in 90 degree humid weather, our fans and air conditioners turned off. Power went out all along our street and it wouldn't be for another three hours, at the least, until all is turned on again. Wow. What luck! I get to practice praying and being in quiet. This is what I chose to do instead of complain or fret. I laid on the couch....calm heart beat keeps the body cooler...and just watched the trees thinking about Him.

With this choice my day, although not the best, was most definitely not the worst. It's hot, sticky, humid, and uncomfortable. But we are in the dining room right now, both working, together instead of in separate rooms as usual. What a blessing!

Christmas in July!

The Story

I am a huge fan of Christmas morning. My family is all separated, but we are all together, happily, on Christmas morning. We love our traditions. :)

One of my favorite Christmas morning memories was when I woke my younger sister up at 3am (as we always did) to go downstairs and see what Santa brought us. I think I was around 10 years old at the time. I remember walking down the stairs, and just over the banister I saw a large white table set up in the livingroom! It was magnificent!! I knew it had to be mine, it was like a shining star lit up by the Christmas tree.

To this day, that white table is in my studio, cut up, written up, and banged up.....I so love my white drawing table!

Love of Food

Food is my hobby. The back story.

I always envied those who had hobbies because I didn't think I had one. When I had free time, I sketched and watched movies. I considered my art to be my hobby, so that is what I always said when asked.

I was a late bloomer in the cooking. My mom is an awesome cook, always very good at making due with what was in the fridge and being creative. My sister is an awesome baker! But in college something started to change.

Not having any money to buy a lot of food, I had to start getting creative. It started with mixing mashed potatoes and candied carrots in a bowl as a meal. Then noodles with salad dressing. (keep in mind folks, we're talking less than $10 a week on food here!). I had to be creative.

Now, 10 years later, I find a lot of joy in cooking and making the plate look purdy. I think presentation is key to the appetite, at least for me. And if it isn't full of color, then it isn't healthy nor appealing to eat! I treat my cooking like my paintings. Just ask Brian, if I don't get it right, oh man, I am NOT a happy camper...even if it tastes okay. Bless his heart, he eats everything I make and says "mmm good".

Hamburger Salad

adapted from pampered chef's recipe

1 lbs lean ground turkey
1 tbsp reduced sodium soy sauce
1 tbsp honey
1 c. ketchup
1 tbsp mustard
1 c. chopped tomatoes
1 tbsp dry minced onion
1 tbsp flour
cut romaine lettuce
shaved colby jack cheese
1 large carrot, sliced
Chow Mien noodles
-items in bold mean you determine the amount. you generally want just a bit more lettuce than meat on each plate.

Ground turkey meat. Once browned add first six ingredients. Stir in well. Lightly add flour little by little to thicken up meat mixture. Next lay lettuce and carrots, mixed, onto center of plate(s). Add meat, dividing among the plates evenly. Lastly sprinkle cheese and then chow mien noodles on top. Voila! Yum yum yum!

Now to mix the two.

Some day I would love to make a cook book with my artwork in it. That's a dream. But for now I am following the path of a friend and bringing my art and cooking together as "in between" artworks.

This means, when I'm uninspired or transitioning from one painting to another, I will create a wee painting using my scrap watercolor paper. These fairies will be sitting on mushrooms (mostly) and other foods.

The goal is to keep them under 3-4 hours, small, and simple.

The friend I'm following? Natalie over at Meadow to Grove. She's painting veggies called "Roots of Perseverance".

I don't have a cool name for mine, but I think she's on to something special. :) Let me know if you choose to do something similar. Maybe we can all follow Natalie's lead in persevering when we're blocked artistically.

...a daughter of the King

My current Work in Progress is one of great scale and testimony to myself. With the state fair right around the corner (work due June 17th) I knew I wanted to do something "special" just for it.

I knew:
-I wanted it to be larger than 8x10
-I wanted to show more play in watercolor
-I wanted it to be fantasy oriented
-I wanted it to be a self reflection of some sort

I spent a day going through photographs and concept phrases. What am I going to paint?!

The phrase "I am Eve" was my starting point. I am of Eve, she was the first woman, and I come from her. I am also fallen like she is. So I had to find an image that said "I am Eve". Once I found it, I sketched out my concept.

As I sketched her out, the title changed. Although I am of Eve, that wasn't what was most important. That isn't the point. And that certainly isn't the end of the story as to who I am! The Spirit said I am more than that, I am more precious than just a daughter of Eve.

I am the daughter of the most high KING. I am a daughter of God.

I was ready to move onto the watercolor paper. A very scary task. I loved the sketch so much that I was actually afraid to go on, to try drawing the portrait again. I was also afraid her size would not be what I wanted or planned. The paper was 20x16, and I wanted most of it to be play with watercolor. Which meant she wasn't to be too large. I was also preparing to draw in colored pencil only, so erasing was minimal.

I started...worked so hard to make sure the emotion and spirit was there...that I didn't realize I drew her too big. :/ I prayed.

I had two choices: let this drawing go and start again (which meant buying another $10 sheet of watercolor paper); or continue on and work with the challenge presented to me.

I always teach my students to problem solve when their piece doesn't go as they planned. Here's a perfect opportunity to practice what I preach. I also believed God was working with me.

It was time to solve the background. I knew I wanted it to be loose, fun, and experimental. Garden like, and I had my colors already in mind. I used to squirt watercolor paint out of tubes onto large sheets of mat board then add water...allowing the paint to do what it wished. I wanted to do something similar but with a mature level of control and purpose.

Once that was in place I had Brian come in to help me figure out the butterflies. He's awesome at composition and placement of objects!

I traced my butterflies and began to add greens into the shadow areas of the skin. I wanted to switch my focus to the skin and face. One of my biggest inspirations of all time, and to this day, is Mucha. I wanted this piece to reflect how much his work inspires mine. So the face is pretty important, as Mucha would put much attention to it and not the rest of the skin of the body. Nor the values of the clothes.

Everything is to a point where I can't determine what needs to be pushed or left alone until the hair is finished. The hair is a pretty loud part of the piece. Confident with the face, time for hours towards the hair, my style of course! :)

This is where I am today. After working on the hair for a while I can now see that other areas of the piece need pushing. The fabric will be more navy as well as the tones in the skin. Stay tuned for more updates!

P.S. "Where did the wings go?!" You ask...well...composition wise they didn't work since I ended up drawing her too large for the paper. Also, fairy wings for me denote "Earthly" or "Eve", but the change of title...although I am earthly and human, I wanted to emphasize the relationship to the King.

It's hot here in Des Moines, record high of over 90 degrees F. The studio is packed with humid air, so this post is short. I think I might take a nap till Brian get's home to pass the heat away.

The Vault

There has been some talk about opening the vault.
It's scary.
It's old.
It's saturated.
It's outlined.
It's purple.

What's in the vault?

The vault means surfacing work from 2007 and back. There may be a piece here and there from those years still floating about on my etsy page or website, but those are rare. I've had several requests/comments to bring the old work back.

Why open the vault now?

In 2007/2008 I began to change my way of painting, which has been in constant change till about now. That's natural, I believe, but my past work personally doesn't do it for me.

I have adored the concepts, compositions, colors, etc. always, but relying on black lines is not something I teach. It was a way to make sure my lines showed up, and to clean up the pencil from sketching. The black lines were used as default, without any real purpose. I thank one of my college professors for pointing that out. And I took him seriously.

I moved onto sepia pens, but that still...in my opinion, restricted my work.
Placed up against my work today, there is a drastic difference in style. Tho you can tell it's still my work, I have moved away from the anime/Disney look to a more realistic. Maybe it's the challenge that I'm after, or that I want my work to be more high end fantasy. Not sure yet as to why the switch.

Two love birds...

What a fantastic 48 hours this has been. I went and visited my friend Natalie and we sat most of the day yesterday at her dining room table. Talking, eating great food, taking walks, and best of all, drawing!

It is very fulfilling, for me, when sitting with a great friend and creating artwork for hours upon hours on end. The day flew by but we didn't care. Natalie finished...what..four paintings?! And I got two brand new drawings ready for paintin'.

I'm titling them "Love Birds" as a pair.

Not sure what they're individual titles will be. After I drew the girl first, her face reminded me of..well...me. So after much consideration and ponder with Natalie, it was agreed upon that the partner piece would be a boy...and yup, it's Brian. :)

Each is 5x8 inches, drawn in brown colored pencil on hot press arches 140lbs watercolor paper. I'm lovin' the arches block!

These are drawings I find scary to paint.

I struggled with them. I only had references for the birds so the figures took some thought. After working so hard on them, and loving the sketches, I'm afraid I'll screw them up in paint.

Do you think any of the old master painters ever felt that way about a piece? I sometimes wonder that...

After Struggling with D.I.Y. postcards, they came to the rescue

Who sells the best paper for D.I.Y. postcards?

I have gone through many different papers, spending lots of money, and now have stacks that I probably will never use, just to find what's right for postcards.

I've been determined to save by making my own, but to purchase cardstock strong enough just isn't possible without spending loads of money.

I gave in and just started to make them with the best quality matte paper I could find. Unfortunately customers found this paper still too flimsy. So I moved on to the idea of having them professionally made.

Who can provide the best price for the best product?

I went to overnightprints.com, zazzle.com, vistaprint.com, and yet I couldn't find a deal that allowed me to continue charging the price I had in my shop. When I broke down the numbers, it was still too expensive...and I wasn't going to charge $7 for one postcard. You crazy?!

I almost came to just settle with the fact I would have to undercharge and pay extra to offer postcards.

Who came to my rescue?

Bindery 1. Enough said. They're a local printer here in Des Moines, ran by the lovely Renatta and her family. Name sound familiar? She also runs Lotus Moments Event Center where I just recently had my Artist Reception.

Most large binderies and printing companies probably wouldn't bother with a small business artist who needs a handful of postcards. What a waste of time and money! They're accustomed to thousands to be printed off for one client.

Bindery 1's passion to serve everyone, large and small, makes them unique. I had a couple hundred postcards printed for the artist reception and was impressed with the price AND the quality! Not to mention the turnaround time.

After many questions and her patience, I plunged and ordered 500 postcards. HUGE order......for little 'ol me.

I can now offer professional grade, strong, vivid, and affordable postcards to my customers while staying local! Who knew a business would be so willing? The new postcards will be offered soon. :)

The Bottom Line:
Don't be afraid to approach your local binderies and printers and get a quote from them. There might be someone out there who is willing to do the small run to support you, and in turn it will support them! And if you can't find anyone, contact Renatta at Bindery 1!

I've been encouraged for years and years to submit my work to sci-fi fantasy conventions.

Of course, I submit to Demi Con every year, for over 10 years now. But as I'm making my list and checking it twice, I have noticed a common theme for all art shows:

The Display Art is only for originals or limited editions.

Oh.

I did not realize that. Shoot.

I have a few originals left that can be hung up...but that doesn't help with sales. Very rarely do I sell an original at the con.

Secondly, I don't have limited edition prints. :/ I mean I do, like 4, from like...6 years ago. That's it.

So, if you go to the shows, don't look for my work on the display panels, I'll be over in the shuffle of the pile...in the print shop.

Right now the ARL is in the lead! They just got a new facility and it's because of their work that Madie was rescued from an alley and put into my warm arms. It's because of their work that Talor found a home where she could get the personal attention she requires.

Art for April

Two new paintings using professional grade watercolors.

Finally she is finished, a difficult one to complete.

"Lady of the Field" has taken what feels like months to complete. She was put on hold to prepare for the art show/reception then afterwards...eh...just didn't feel like finishing her. The painting was in that awkward phase of painting. Nothing looks right, hard to see where it's going, etc.

And I have to be honest, I hated the mushrooms! I think I still had the mushrooms from "Lady of the Forest" in my head intending these to be the same.

Duh, they can't. They're a different kind of mushroom.

What I also discovered through this piece is that painting will take some getting used to now. I feel like I'm learning watercolors all over again....except this time actually learning from the books. Watercolor has always been self taught for me, really.

So when I got my new palette and paints, I hesitated.

I felt like I was going to mess up and just couldn't afford to. I felt like a senior in high school thinking ahead. Thinking that the piece I'm working on MUST go into my portfolio, therefore I must NOT screw it up. Heh, watercolor always screws up...it's what you do with that screw up that makes the difference. In my opinion.

I had to remind myself that I did know what I was doing...and that I do understand watercolor. Then Brian said something profound "Babe, just use purple for the shadows." ...like I always do.

There's a difference between following the book word for word, and reading the book, then applying it to what you already know.

She finished pretty quickly after that stressful night.

The next piece I worked on went much quicker, smoother, and my head didn't feel like it was going to explode trying to equate color mixing. Although "April's Diamond" did have it's challenges (limited palette + composition) it didn't pertain to the paints or color mixing themselves.

If you paint in watercolor and you haven't done the "multiplication color chart" (as I'm calling it) please do! It's an awesome reference, even if it's just trying to pick out a palette for a painting. :)

Number Crunching

There's been a lot of talk about my pricing.

Especially during the reception last Friday. Although it was great that my work was affordable, I found it astonishing to find out many believed my prices were too low.

Now, opening up about this truth to the general public might not be "wise", but I believe it's an important issue. It's important to all of us...sellers and buyers alike.

I truly believe it's important to keep my customers in the truth about my business. Maybe that makes how I sell different, I'm not sure.

But what I do know is I never sat down and crunched my numbers to find prices that were fair to my customers and to me.

I have always placed my prices based on the competition.

Last night I broke down my costs. Even the ink used in my printer, which is a difficult one to break down. I used a formula I found on the Etsy Blog.

Here's what I used:
Cost (Labor + Materials) x 2 = Wholesale Price
Wholesale Price x 2 = Retail Price

For some of the items I offer this became difficult because the price was way above and beyond what I would even pay for something I just had to have.

I want my items to be affordable and obtainable. That has always been my mission...not just as a human being and seller, but also as a Christian. My work is a gift to me, which in turn is a gift to my customers.

It opened my eyes too. It showed me exactly how much I spend on materials and how often I probably need to restock. But it also required me to raise my prices. This is difficult for me...pricing is just not fun.

So I truly hope my customers can understand the raising of the prices. I kept it as low as I could, and I still don't believe that my labor cost should be very high. The average cost for an item in my shop is $10.00.

Reception Overview

Friday night was a blast! It was way beyond my expectations.

Setting up with mom we discovered that Lotus Moments Event Center had tons to offer. We knew the space was fantastic, but had no idea Renatta had an basement full of items to help decorate. She was so willing to help and let us use whatever we needed.

Many people showed up to share in the night. I enjoyed every single conversation I had, and saw some old friends from long ago come in support. I was above cloud nine! But leading up to it I was nervous.

My mom was a huge help that day, cutting cheese, helping arrange everything, and setting up the food table. We got the sound working, put on my play list, and gathered some items to make it all feel complete.

As I was walking around helping, I realized why I was so nervous. The music finally told me. I felt very exposed. Not only was my work on the walls...my originals...but the music playing was the same music I listen to as I work. In the privacy of my studio.

In the past when I have shared the music I have gotten some negative or "not so sure" responses. With all of this combined I was a wreck inside. How was I to speak? How do I explain where everything comes from? What if they find this weird? Or what if they get turned off? What if...what if...what if.

After a brief pep talk with my mom, and people starting to come in the door...thankfully I just couldn't think about it anymore. I was too happy to see friends and family. To have them there first really put me at ease.

Then the first sale happened. O.M.G! And they were ladies I did not know. How exciting and nerve wrecking all at once. But God was in control. Oh how happy I was to know He was in control! After that..before I could turn around the business aspect just took off. I was floored!

As my brother in law put it best "The people want more". I had no IDEA that there was such an interest in purchasing my originals. I sell stickers, postcards, prints, and the like. What seems forever I have felt this is where my work belonged. I didn't know that people would be so willing to invest in my original work.

(Note: believe it or not, there are 34 pieces hanging in this space. The center section of the center is the only place nothing is hung because of dancing)

Honestly, to see my work all framed, up on a wall, and people coming just to see it was surreal. I can't wait to do it again!

The above picture is of my dad and I. Unfortunately I did not get any photos of my mom, sister, or husband with me. Yet my dad, through God, is where I get my abilities. He too is an artist and art teacher. Because of his support and nurturing of my gift, along with my family, I have become the artist I am today. A proud moment for both of us, to see this realized.

And one for my mom, who gets to sit back and watch it all bloom. :)

Look What's Coming!

I also ordered a new palette tray! The Stephen Quiller Color Wheel Palette!

I have a lot of palettes, but none that could hold everything I need. Plus, they're all rectangle. I'm quite the visual person, and to see my colors in a "color wheel" appeals to me greatly and I think it will help me visualize my color choices better.

So excited to get this in the mail along with the new paints. I can't wait to get it all set up!

Professional Grade

It's a large investment.

I just spent $80 on 9 tubes of watercolor paint. Nine. Seems like a small number for that price, but I believe it's worth the investment.

I have been using student grade Winsor & Newton watercolors for years, and have a few professional/artist grade tubes. The idea of spending $10 on one 5ml tube of paint just didn't compute. Until I got the Daniel Smith Try It Dot pages. These are AWESOME!

Over 200 colors, all there to try out and use. The real deal in trial size. Genius. It is because of these sheets did I finally come to realize, as a professional, how much I needed professional grade watercolors.

They're smooth like silk, mix without a hitch, and the colors are so gorgeous! I then decided to purchase. But the price tag was still making my stomach turn. So expensive!

This led me to an entire week of studying and figuring out which colors to purchase. The DS dot sheets were key to this. They're the only professional grade paints I have right now. To help I found a great website that makes watercolor paints into science called HandPrint.

I don't understand much in science, but he had a large section on palette color choices. All of the research was done for me, and they listed which colors were the best to have in every palette....colors that make all of the "convenience" colors (sap green, turquoise, violets, etc.).

That's what I needed, the foundation colors. From there I could at least start, then purchase as needed the extra colors.

I also came upon an exercise to help decide which colors to have in your palette. A color chart. As one of my students yesterday best said "A multiplication chart but with color." Exactly!

Tho the woman who suggested the chart used only 7 colors, I ended up having 13. I wanted to see and be exactly sure what I was going to spend my money on.

This was grueling but totally surprising and fun seeing what two colors made what. I was pretty amazed at the little knowledge I had about color mixing.

Feeling Relieved

Today I felt a great sense of relief and peace...

in knowing how much God has worked in my life this past month.

If you didn't know, you will now. I am on week 3 of quitting smoking. After falling off the wagon many times in the last several years, this time I feel great about it! No credit to me except to follow what has been asked of me.

I went for what I call a jogging walk (jog a block, walk a block, repeat). I have always wanted to be a jogger, but knew very early on, even before smoking, that it was going to be very hard. If not unobtainable...for private reasons (don't want to give the impression I'm setting out blame).

I don't want my poor choice to hinder me from jogging. When trying in the past it has hurt in my side, sharp pains, hard to breathe, and what feels like no oxygen getting to my entire body. I know you have to work up the endurance, but it never felt "right".

YET, this time, no sharp pains, and very little effort to catch my breath! This made me think. No IBS symptoms, I can eat dairy again...and green peppers, and I'm just more at peace. I feel great (although I have taken up munching A LOT - more than usual. :/ ). But I rather gain a few pounds than continue smoking.

I feel refreshed. I feel ready to focus. On me. As an artist, for me this can sometimes be difficult. I, like many other human beings, have deep down wounds, emotions, habits, and those "mysterious" stereotype, noir thoughts "artists" have. I have a bubble around me that I feel sometimes gets in the way of my life, especially relationally. To feel at peace and refreshed opens up trust and confidence.

These "deep" things have been the foundation of the work I create. I try to portray emotion through my paint. Though the mission of my work is to bring peace, hope, love, and joy, it is my hope this renewed focus and freshness will brighten the work I create even more.

It has also made me more confident to make changes and letting things go.

In my business I put a lot of time into the products I create, and they are usually always getting better, heh, at least I like to think so. One of my ideas was the sticker tins. I loved the idea of recycling altoid tins and having this solid carrying case for little girls to collect stickers in.

Problem: I have ran out of time to spray paint and assemble them.

Solution: Offering the stickers in plastic packages and making little tins that I don't need to spray paint and offer...not just for stickers...but separately.

I hope to have them up by the end of the week. Case in point - the sticker tins were a great idea in my opinion, but I had to let them go and find a different route. It's not as interesting to me, or efficient for the customer, but better for my business. Now I can give each product an equal amount of my time.

Blog Facelift

Yes, I know babe, the birds need to be sketchy like the girl. :) I plan on drawing a few birds in my sketchbook today. I'm happy we're on the same page about that.

He's amazing at code, and has the graphic design eye to go along with it. I love the freshness of my blog now!

Where Have I Been!?

I must be honest, I have purposefully ignored my blog.

(current work in progress at end of post)

And because I'm a very upfront and honest person, with my heart on my sleeve, I'll tell you why.

I have been using it as a means for advertising, and find that...well...let's just say not satisfying. I want my blog to be personal, personable, and an insight to what I do.

It just hasn't been that.

There are "rules" to go by with how to lay out your wording, how to catch peoples' eye, and so forth. And going on tangents and adding a whole bunch of words not needed in a sentence to get a point across is not okay. Unfortunately, that's just not who I am.

I have the resources (my husband, Brian, is a web designer and knows these things) and I have tried. Feels like I'm going against my grain.

So where have I been? Working, producing new images, and trying to run my etsy shop efficiently.

The painting was created for someone who lost a child, it like many commissioned pieces, this was especially spiritual. Lots of prayer during the entire process until paint. I then just let it be without thought as to what I was doing. Kind of letting my hand do it's own thing.

I am anxious to see how the parent will respond to this painting, and it is my hope to share this as a print in the future. But I am leaving that up to the recipient. I will let you all know either way. :)

Lady of the Field - WIP

Always searching for a new technique.
Here I have printed the sketch onto watercolor paper. Interesting to say the least.

I pre-soaked the paper first and stretched it.

Ran it through the printer - fyi: make sure the background is TOTALLY blank of any "noise". It prints too then you have ink dots over the whole thing. So we'll see how it turns out with those. :/

Began to add paint...which the first layer didn't apply quite evenly. I don't know if the "spots" (we'll call them...where the paint sits in darker little spots) have to do with the paper and ink mixed, or if it's the paint. That's one of the Daniel Smith paints.

Once I started to add paint I realized I couldn't see my lines much any more. They're already faint as it is (the lighter the lines, the less ink bleeds).

I went back in with a colored pencil to bring back some of my more important lines.

Other than the dark watercolor spots I'm pleased so far as to how the paint is resting with the ink and how the colored pencil brought the sketch back to life.

I'm concerned with messing this up, but also know that if I don't just do it, I won't grow. :)

Got the drawing all finished and applied first paint yesterday. Thought I'd go spunky and try something different with her hair. Couldn't decide whether it should be brown or red. So instead, I went brown with green highlights. :P Something different.

Hopefully more paint later this week if time permits.

Yes, not art related, but cooking is one of my hobbies. Even more so, cookies are really all I can bake besides biscuits, so this is big.

Ever since I got an electric beater I haven't been able to make my chocolate chip cookies (original toll house recipe) quite right. They always turn out fluffy and too soft. Although good, that isn't my fav.

MY cookies are supposed to come out crunchy around the edges and chewy in the middle.

This time I chose NOT to use the beater and do it all by hand. It was a great work out for my arms, plus, they finally turned out the way they were supposed to! Yay!!!

Changing a Painting Step

Working on an illustration for a possible book, and thought I'd change up how I apply the drawing.

Of course I start with a sketch from my sketchbook and scan it in.

Resize to what I need and up the levels in photoshop so that I can see my lines clearly.
Print it off, place under watercolor paper on light board.

The change is this, instead of using my graphite pencil...which I tend to be VERY neat with, I decided to use a colored pencil. I have come to love the texture of colored pencils so much, that I've even started to just sketch in them.

I don't know exactly how this will effect the painting process, or the paint in general, but hoping it gives a warm and soft undertone.

I guess we'll have to wait and see! :)

I'm looking into purchasing a new camera to take photos for the etsy shop...
but making a choice is frustrating. Reviews are almost annoying because you get the same reviews, good and bad, for every kind of camera.

Focus of the series is to create an angel for every time of the day. Angel must not be older than 15 years of age, is female (which I know I know, kinda against what I believe....girl angels don't exist, but these are children so I'm making an exception), and each has an animal that goes with that time.

Now, this one is currently titled Twilight. But should her name be Midnight? Because that's the time of day she is, tho Twilight sounds cooler.

The Rescuing Light (WIP)

It's been a LONG month of September, but I am now finally at my drawing table...DRAWING!

It feels like I haven't painted for months, so yesterday I decided only to focus on a vision I had for a painting. Strangely enough, it didn't turn out how I planned, but pleased with it.

A verse came to mind as I drew this:

"Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path." -Psalm 119:105

The piece has more meaning than that, but I remember when I started my walk with Christ this verse stuck out so strongly. I believe it!

There's quite a bit of symbolism in this piece, which I adore, and can't wait for you to find them all!

My husband asked "Is this an angel or Jesus?".

On to February! Amethyst, a favorite stone in my family, is turning out beautifully. She reminds me of "Lady of Sapphire". The movement and just how she was born onto the paper.

I did an amethyst piece a few days ago, and I'm not going to show it. It looks like I did it in high school...looked just like my work back then. I find that pretty bizzare.

NOTE: She WILL be done this weekend. I have had a few asking about February...so be forewarned!

How can I do this kind of work, but then on any given day do a piece that looks like my skills reduced back down to 20 years ago?! I showed my husband and just gawked. I don't think I'll ever fully know.

The cover to "Marigolds" is finished. I am extremely pleased with the turn out and the author plans on me creating the next two covers. Totally thrilled to do so! I had a blast painting this, tho the new technique takes more time.

Cover Art in Progress

So I mentioned to those who are part of my mailing list that I am working on a cover illustration. The book is being self published through Amazon. The author and I are very excited!

It's a large illustration that will be a wrap cover (left part on back, right part on front of book).

I've applied a few application techniques taken from Stephanie Law's book when it came to the environment. I always have a hard time explaining bushes and leaves in my paintings. Her technique shined some light on ways I can problem solve it.

My hope is to have it done this week, so I'll post the finished illustration once I'm done! Can't wait!

*NOTE: Brian and I went horseback riding for our one year anniversary, which has helped me place myself more in the elves' shoes. Pretty nifty.

Multi Purpose Charms

The truth of the matter is, as much fun as they were I'm no pro at them.

This is my month, November. It also happens to be one of my favorite months in general...living here in Iowa it's usually beautiful! Although I enjoy the previous piece I did for Citrine, I knew she could be stronger. And after drawing "Lady of Sapphire" I was pushed by my ambition to draw her over.

It hasn't been too difficult to stay in the mood for this piece. The rain just won't stop coming down here in Iowa. Although, there aren't too many poppies out and about...pounding rain can destroy delicate flowers.

Yet with rain, unless you're fighting the flooding, it can be romantic, charming, and just down right beautiful.

I use EBSQ's flower of the month show to usually determine which flower I'm going to do next. And combined with drawing couples, this is what I have come up with. I love poppies, but these are unique. You don't see many pink double petaled poppies here in Iowa. At least I haven't seen any recently. Did you know there are blue poppies!? It was tempting, but I wanted rainy and that's a lot of blue!

First two hours of paint, hope to have it finished today or tomorrow! :) There is a general spot I'm not in love with, but hopefully once the poppies get their make over things will be seen differently.

Working on some more Ikarian mice. Ikara is a land were the wee mice dwell and have magical hearts. Tho they use very little of their magic, and prefer to use what God and the earth provide. Such lovely little creatures. The girls have beautiful fairy wings, and the boys have strong, dashing angel wings.

A piece I hope to make into a large painting some day. My sister in law mentioned I should do more couples in my work, and I agree! So on a small road trip this past weekend I drew this. Again the woman has fairy wings, and the man has angel wings. I came up with the concept because in the Bible it does not mention the angels being female, and we see more female fairies then male. So I decide that since women are delicate and nurturing creatures the fairy wings fit. And because men are strong, and protective creatures they should have angel wings. I like this idea because in my heart, it fits. It's my imagination anyways. :P
